Sanjiv, HSBC UK: "Sunset at Joshua Tree National Park – USA"
Jury’s comment: "Colours are vivid and bright but also dark and ominous, giving the image an almost surreal and ethereal feel.
The composition has great depth and I love the fact you can see the city in the background; nice contrast between nature and city life."
Our August #HSBCPhotographer theme was ‘Summer.’ Congratulations to Sanjiv from HSBC UK, whose photograph of Joshua Tree National Park in California won this month’s competition.
His surreal sunset shot captures a gorgeous desert scene, complete with a backdrop of shrinking city lights. Our judges loved it – well done, Sanjiv!
Time to gear up for next month’s theme: ‘Calm.’ Can’t wait to see your submissions!
Here are our top 3 for this month. See the top 10 in the gallery below. Congratulations to all.
🏆 1st place – Sanjiv, HSBC UK 🏆 2nd place – Nallala, HSBC India 🏆 3rd place – Vijay, HSBC UK
Sanjiv, HSBC UK: “Sunset at Joshua Tree National Park – USA” Jury’s comment: “Colours are vivid and bright but also dark and ominous, giving the image an almost surreal and ethereal feel. The composition has great depth and I love the fact you can see the city in the background; nice contrast between nature and city life.”
Nallala, HSBC India: “A reminder of the radiant colours that span our landscapes. This picture is one of many such representations of a summer evening as experienced by a fisherman in the backwaters of Kerala. A routine evening for him and a reminder of what each passing season has to offer: a simple relaxing evening, a long-awaited vacation with loved ones, an opportunity to watch wildlife come to life or some time to contemplate what life has to offer.” Jury’s comment: “The colours in this really evoke the feeling of a warm summer night with the solitary figure in the foreground bringing a sense of peace and calm.”
Vijay, HSBC UK: “Summer Storm! Gaint’s Chair, Bryn Gwynant, Snowdonia, UK” Jury’s comment: “The reflections captured in the lake and the striking composition remind us that summer isn’t all about sunshine and hot days.”
Yuet, HSBC Singapore: “The Matterhorn in the Alps. The unique shape makes it one of the most famous mountains in the world.” Jury’s comment: “Love the contrast between very green, summery looking hills and the white tips of the Matterhorn. Colours are vibrant and eye-catching, the composition is really striking – a busy foreground, middle ground and background contrast well with the almost flat vivid blue sky.”
Himanshu, HSBC India: “In summer even the wild feels the heat….” Jury’s comment: “This image has beautifully captured a moment of peaceful calm, transporting the viewer into the wild landscape of the photo.”
Terry, HSBC Hong Kong: “Although Hong Kong is small in size, she has long coastlines (733km in total). The best way to enjoy the beauty of Hong Kong coastlines is going to beaches in summer.” Jury’s comment: “At first glance your focus is on the peaceful seas and sky, and only when you look closer do you see the buzzing activity of summer holidaymakers on the beach.”
Beam, HSBC Philippines: “Best time to explore, see the islands and enjoy the sea breeze.” Jury’s comment: “The extraordinary variety of different shades of blue, with the figures in the foreground dwarfed by the sky, make for an image that really grabs the eye.”
Clive, HSBC Hong Kong: “A beautiful summer’s day, perfect for outdoor dining by the water or cycling through the city.” Jury’s comment: “The composition with the rows of bikes in the foreground and the sun umbrellas and bustling city in the background really underlines the sentiment and story behind the photo of a sunny summer day in the city.”
Mohammad, HSBC UAE: “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams” Jury’s comment: “Bright colours and strong composition make you really feel like you’re in a summer in Europe, although it’s slightly overexposed, seeing the blue sky helps to bring that feeling to life.”
Mohammad, HSBC UAE: “Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” Jury’s comment: “The use of perspective and the framing of the image lend this photo a painterly quality. Seeing the blue sky reflected on the water brings the feeling of summer to life.”
